As a history major, all I ever knew of the state of Montana growing up was General Custer and the Battle of Little Bighorn. I had no idea they had mountains. Years later I would come to learn it had mountains, and for some reason, I assumed being so far North from Colorado, that these mountains covered the entire state – like Alaska. This loop is a great way to experience the Northern Sangre de Cristos without getting yourself in to too much trouble as you would on peaks like the Crestones or Little Bear. When I lived in Silverthorne for a year in 2010-11, I had the pleasure of having the Gores in my backyard – literally. My condo was located 100 yards from the Buffalo Mountain TH at 9,500 feet, so at the sight of any free time, I tried my best to take advantage. Several of my closest climbing buddies and I have a couple of things in common that made this particular trip worth sharing here. For one, we have a close relationship with the Gore Range of central Colorado, particularly with the peaks that fall within Eagles Nest Wilderness.
