I’ve been trying to plan a trip to climb 13er Isolation Peak (13,118) in the southern region of Rocky Mountain National Park for a couple years now. After trying to make an overnighter out of it, I decided to consolidate the logistics and just do it in a long day. Labor Day weekend in the San Juans has become sort of a tradition over the years. The extra day, usually accompanied with decent weather, combine for a perfect time to bag some peaks. With a full year of long winter slogs, spring descents and summer ridge runs, your legs are finely tuned for long days, and the monsoon season is finally starting to calm down. I had a Saturday morning to kill with zero obligations and little interest in hanging around the house. Looking at the various options available to a Denverite weekend warrior, I decided on a day hike of Keller Mountain in the Gore Range. I can’t say enough for the splendor of the Gores, so I won’t go much further than to say each time I get in there I become more and more enamored with the range and what it has to offer. Read more…
Hugh just bought a house in Lafayette and wanted to take advantage of the options in his backyard. We were looking for some good vert and a solid workout, but not looking to drive far. Bear and South Boulder peaks fit the bill perfectly. Sunday was an incredible day for hanging outside. The temps were in the high 50’s to low 60’s and there was plenty of blue sky.
