Matt, Brian, and I pulled into the Equity Mine Trailhead at midnight, Jetboiled up a Cup O’ Noodles for dinner, and bivied underneath a clear, starry sky. The rest of the crew had pulled in earlier in the afternoon, hoping for a 4:30am start. I was excited at the thought of skiing San Luis and happy to be finally getting out with Sarah’s group. I drove my car as far as I could past Winfield in the pre-dawn hours of what would turn into an awesome spring day. Parking at a camp site about half a mile in, I shouldered my setup and began trudging up the dirt road towards the standard summer TH for Huron. In terms of access and interesting ski routes, Tabeguache Peak is somewhat limited. Basically the only interesting line from a skier’s perspective is the North Face, which also happens to be the most difficult side of the peak to access. This lack of access is what makes Tab’s North Face a relatively rare ski descent, but for those willing to put up with some punishment, the line is well worth it. Keep reading…

We wanted to ski these peaks over Memorial Day Weekend last year but thanks to the nasty dust storms the San Juans received, we decided to hold off a year in hopes of better snow conditions.
