A few weekends back Rick and I headed into the Holy Cross Wilderness to tag a pair of 13ers on its northwestern edge – Gold Dust and “Pika Peak”. It turned out to be a fun day, with a neat traverse between the two peaks and a stop off at Lake Charles for a dip before heading into Eagle for some cold ones. After spending the first half of June getting packed up and moved into our place in Eagle Vail, it was finally time to go check out the new backyard. A few months back Rick and I got an invite from our buddy Brandon to join he and his crew on their annual “Hardman” Hut Trip in March. I’m not sure how many years in a row they’ve kept up the tradition, but the general concept of the trip is a 10 to 15 person group, big traverses between multiple backcountry huts, and lively evenings with lots of cooking, drinking, and other shenanigans along the way. The Williams Mountains are a nice set of peaks on the west side of Independence Pass in the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. Together they form the high points of a long north-south ridge line that separates the Lost Man and Hunter Creek drainages. Spread out along the ridge are five ranked thirteeners, which are often strung together in a single push from Lost Man TH in what has colloquially become known as the “Billy Traverse”. Read more…
