Backcountry ski days have been real hard to come by for me this spring. I got plenty of resort days in this winter, but for whatever reason, getting up and down mountains just hasn’t happened for me this spring. I’ll mostly blame the Grand Canyon R2R2R training, which ate up a lot of weekends. I’ll also blame the general trials and exertions of a mid-30’s dude with two kids. The month of April has come and gone and it feels like things are rapidly heading towards summer below 12,000 ft around here. Statistically, despite Denver and the Front Range being above 100% SWE on the season, we’re at 71% of the median for the state as a whole. Though truncated spring seasons can be frustrating, they can also make for a good excuse to return to reliable lines on peaks close to home and just enjoy the skiing for what it is, while it lasts. Ski season ended on a high note as we kept up tradition with our 9th annual Torreys season finale party at the end of May. Then with a pair of races slated for August and September (that may actually happen, like for real) it was time to start ramping up the running miles as trails dried out throughout the valley. Aside from all of that though, summer peakbagging days are always calling my name this time of year and I’ve managed to get out for several fun outings up high over the past few weeks. Read more…
Time in the mountains has been difficult to come by for me so far this year. Between selling and buying a pair of homes, preparing for Anna-Lisa and I’s move out of Denver, and training for a series of trail races in June/July, it’s been a thin year for ski descents. I haven’t been particularly broken up about it though, because it’s also been a thin year for the Colorado snowpack. Conditions have seemed rough up high for the better part of a month now, not helped by the fact that our base was disappointing to begin with. Keep Reading…
