A Deep Day at Vail Pass

January up on the pass and the snow is deep.

Saturday morning I met Brian at Vail Pass after nearly 2 feet of snow had fallen in as many days. With the entire pass being more or less untouched, we decided to make our way to the east side and lap low-hanging fruit runs for several hours. After 3,600 feet of turns we skied back to the car and grilled out as temps dropped and even more snow rolled in. It was one of those season-defining days out there, with sunshine, bottomless turns, and very few other people to speak of.

A few laps on Uneva’s south ridge for the first few runs of the day. If the easiest terrain to access at the pass is untracked, why go any further?

In the skin track and heading north.

Brian on another lap.

Then it was on to several laps at Hundred Turns of Fun as another squall began to roll in.

Working our way south back to the car, we skied another run down Uneva’s south ridge trees. Photo by Brian.

The “Broville Grill” making its first appearance in awhile. Italian sausage hit the spot.

…capped off by a brew from 4 Noses.

This snow year has made quite a comeback over last year thus far, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to slow down anytime soon. Here’s hoping it doesn’t…
